Italian charms continue to be very popular! The trend began in the mid 1980s in Italy. The Soccer Players of Italy requested a style of bracelet for their team that they could wear at the Soccer Finals that represented them as a team differently from any other at the time. The craze spread so fast that soccer players have been known to wear bracelets that reflected their country's colors. The trend spread to the United States after American tourists became enamored with the style.

An Italian charm Starter Bracelet from our store consists of 18 blank individual rectangular links. Standardized sizing allows for each piece to be interchangeable with any Italian charm. Unlike traditional Charm Bracelets that dangle off a chain, the Italian Charm Bracelet allows for a complete look that can be changed depending on the wearer's mood and/or changing interests.    A traditional link of an Italian Charm Bracelet consists of a rectangular piece of Stainless Steel on which the design is soldered or etched onto the surface.

Recently, Italian charm makers have begun making full color charms using an enamel process. This process is very expensive though so it is reserved for charms that will sell in large quantities. However, many charm wearers wish to have specific charms made that express the uniqueness of the individual wearing the bracelet. Therefore, as the popularity of Italian charms has increased, manufacturers of the charms have had to find quicker and less expensive means of creating charms.  In the result of this, the charms were mass produced to accommodate the demand.  Because of this the charms were glued not soldered, thin chip, not 100% stainless steel resulting in a less expensive product which was sold at Flea Markets, Retail Budget Stores and Small Mom & Pop stores Just to name a few.
The higher quality charms took a slump in the demand until consumers realized that these (99 cent ones) did not hold up to any time or wear until now.  Consumers like your self have realized that you get what you pay for and the quality of the Italian Charms had taken a huge dive.  Now that the popularity has lessened and you cannot find the charms just anywhere the quality and uniqueness that made these charms s very unique are coming back.  The quality of the Italian Charm with the thick chip, 18kt gold overlay, UV protection are the prime standard consideration of an educated fancier of Today's Italian Charms.

I believe he is Hephaistos (Hephaestus), the son of Zeus and Hera, the god of smiths and crafts and renowned for the craftiness and cunning which is traditionally highly valued in Neapolitan culture ... like many figures of Southern Italian mythology, he migrated to Italy with Greek colonists before the foundation of the Roman Republic. I think very few people are aware of his origins ... most would just call him "il gobbo", the hunchback. He is a symbol of good fortune, because he always came out a winner. In Saxon mythology, he is Wayland or Volund, so he is truly a pan-European figure and very important to English people too.
