What sort of sacrificial anodes do I need for my boat hull?

I have a 45ft Pram Barge and I have just had the hull re-plated . It will be a static house boat in Part Sea & part fresh Water. What sort of anodes to I need? The Size, the material, should they be bolt on or weld on? Help! Thanks

You should use alluminum alloy anodes for a couple of different reasons. Zinc anodes form a zinc hydroxide coating in fresh water rendering them pretty much useless. On the other hand, magnesium anodes work very well in fresh water, but in salt water they overprotect and disintegrate very quickly. By overprotecting they also give your hull an electrical charge that will lift the paint.

You would want to bolt the anodes on, so that they can be changed easily. That may require welding brackets to the hull. In any case you want to have a good electrical contact between the anode and whatever it is protecting. This usually means mounting the anode, bare shiny metal to bare shiny metal, but can also be done by connecting electrical cable to the anode and whatever it is protecting. And never paint the anode.

As for the size anodes to use, you should start with 1 % of the surface being protected. Check the anodes often, if they are disintegrating quickly you should add more or change them more often. They should last at least 1 year and should be replaced when they are 50 % gone. Check with a reputable boat or ship yard and they may be able to check your hull with a voltmeter to give you a more definate answer.
