Incorporating Life Skills Instruction in Lessons for Students with Disabilities

Incorporating life skills in lessons for special needs students.

          Are you a special education teacher?  Is that special need student in your class very knowledgeable about Russian geography for example, yet cannot tie his own shoelaces? Are your lessons almost entirely academically focused?  If you answer yes to any of the above questions, you are in need of some curriculum intervention.  Your lessons need to reflect some life skills instruction.  Life skills instruction is a necessary component for all students with disabilities curriculum.

        Life skills curriculum is a combination of academic, daily living, personal skills integrated in your lesson.  The purpose of this article is to present some basic and simple ways to incorporate life skills in your daily lesson planning.  Teaching specific skills, teaching moments and team teaching are three (3) of the diverse ways that life skills instructions can be integrated in the curriculum.

  Specific Skills   

       A lesson with a specific objective is an effective way to teach an age appropriate specific life skill to special needs students.  Making an assessment is recommended to help you find your students’ specific skills deficits.  One example of teaching a specific skill is when your lesson is focused on teaching students what kind of information should be relayed in an emergency situation.  As with any lesson, good preparation is the key to ensure good delivery and facilitate learning.

Teaching moments

     All teachers, experienced and /or novice know very well that lessons are almost never fully delivered as planned.   At any moment in a planned lesson an appropriate and valuable   “teaching moment” can occur.   Teaching moments need to be recognized and taken advantage of by educators as they present themselves.   A teaching moment offers a unique and unplanned opportunity to connect and relate useful and practical information to your students during instructional time.   That very enthusiastic child who comes to the board with his unlaced sneakers presents an excellent opportunity for an appropriate “teaching moment” where students can learn about safety for example.

 Team Teaching

       Special needs learners are generally entitled to related services as identified in their IEP.  Because related service providers play a major role and have many responsibilities in the educational setting educators can work hand in hand with them to teach life skills mastery to special needs students.  Lessons can be planned in collaboration with the provider (s) to meet the needs of the students.  That teaching moment on safety mentioned above can be extended to a “ how to tie shoelaces “ lesson planned in collaboration with the occupational therapist (s).

      Special needs students face a lot of challenges in a world that is becoming more and more unsettled. Educators have the responsibility to teach useful and practical life skills to help them achieve self- sufficiency and to ease their transition from the classroom to the real world. Teaching specific skills, teaching moments, and team teaching are three (3) of the multiple ways that educators can combine life skills and academic skills instruction in students with disabilities lessons.

I need a funky name and theme for my relay for life team. We were "Caped Crusaders" last year and it was really BORING!!! It was our first time.

Relay for Life is an fundsraiser for the Cancer Council. Raising money to help find a cure.

I saw a team at my first Relay for Life about six years ago that I can still recall clearly. They called themselves The LifeSavers. They all walked around with big, see through, brightly colored inter-tubes around their waists. They really looked like giant LifeSavers.
