Where are the Jewish Temple booty looted by the Romans?

I was just reading about the book " Gods Gold" talking about the Roman capture of the gold from the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem in 70 AD. What do we know about where the treasure is today? Is it in the Vatican? Are there treasure hunters looking for it? How is it that there is no movie about this treasure like the Da Vinci Code?

I myself have not come upon any records of the whereabouts or the fate of these particular items. However knowing about history and what subsequently happened afterwards I can offer an opinion on this. You see, the items where originally taken to the temple of Jupiter on the Capitaline hill in Rome. This was the traditional fate of any important(especially national) booty-taken. They would have been deposited with the priests thereupon.

Now subseqently, the Roman empire eventually became christian, and a very very bigoted and biased one-eventually. Most of the pagan temples were converted into christian churches. However, a temple on one of the main hills of Rome ten times the size of the Capital building of the United States, dedicated to Jupiter Optimus Maximus(Jupiter-the greatest and best)-the main Roman god and general depositary of so much loot would not simply have been converted. It would have been either torn down or the stones used to build other things like churches. Any precious objects found within would have had a varied possibility of destinies.

The first was that before the demise of the Capitaline temple, indulgent emperors such as Commodus and Elagabalus could have simply removed them for their own use and melted the things down. However, Commodus, despite his impiety(having raped the vestal virgin-Julia) would not have dared do this. Even Elagabalus, even though he brought his mother and aunt into the senate(women traditionally were not allowed there except in special circumstances) would not have done so. As mad as these emperors were they had at least the tradition of Rome and a sensible fear of it's people.

Another possibility was that some military emperor such as Caraculla or Diocletian got their hands on them. However both had more sense and Caraculla had a new source of revenue(having made all free people of the empire Roman Citizen in order to collect extra taxes-although judging from the treatment of citizens this extra taxes seem unlikely, however to have more potential soldiers and give more opportunity for monies to be collected) and he looted others as well thus having sources of revenue. Diocletian was a devout pagan who would never have done this.

A third possibility is that when the Roman empire became christian, the loot went into the churches or state treasuries. Then were looted by either the Ayrian Christians-the Visigoths under Alaric who looted Rome in 410 A.D. and considered the Latin church somewhat heretical, or by the pagan Vandals under Genseric in 456 A.D. If this happened then the loot could be anywhere, having been passed around in history and probably been melted down. The first possibility is that it travelled north, got lost in the treasuries of the barbarians, were melted down subsequently for gold currency(gold being scarce in Western Europe in the early middle ages) or being looted by someone else and ending up being destroyed or in someone's very private collection. The second possibility if it ended up in the hands of the Vandals was that either it was melted down or transferred to Constantinopal when the Eastern Roman Empire conquered North Africa from the Vandals by the general Bessalarius in the reign of Justinian I. Hence it either ended up being melted down or back somewhere in Western Europe as a result of the Fourth Crusade in 1204 or gone to the Turks or the east after Thursday the 29th of May 1453. If the third possibility exists then either it is (in some form) in Turkey, Western Europe or somewhere else, taking the form of trade for something-and most probably being passed around over and over again. If it is the fourth possibility then either it is in the ground(by the agency of fanatics) and thus recycle or still there, or it it somewhere within the bowls of the Vatican. I have heard of vast tunnels under that Vatican that are supposed to hold not only treasures such as these but also old manuscripts and vast ancient knowledge. This may be just an urban legend or the ravings of protestant conspiritorists. It also may be true. For the Vatican has a reputation of being an avid collector of historical memerorbellia. In fact they do hold a number of Australian Aboriginal artifacts that the Aborigines themselves have repeatedly ask them back for-but have been refused. So it the fourth possibility exists-then you can bet your bottom dollar that the Vatican still has them.

But really most, if not all people, don't have a clue where these things are. We can only speculate, abet educationally. If these things do exist then it would be good to return them to the people who so obviously they belong to . This would ensure the good name of any who did return these things-for all time. If the Vatican has them then the respect it would earn would far outway the comparitively meagre value of the things themselves. If a private collector has them, the same is true.

Also there is another sub possbility. That whoever has them is holding them for the time(as the fundementalist christians believe) that the anti-christ builds the temple in Jerusalem in an effort to win over the Jews and establish his kingdom. Whatever the whereabouts and reasons thereupon-perhaps a reward can be posted for them. It would have to be a huge reward. Because these things, if intact, would have intesimal historic value. However whoever returned them to their rightful place(and it is the people who made them in the first place) would not only have a large cashable reward(for these things would be subject to legal wrangling and thus have very few buyers) but earn not only the respect but also the good name that would last forever. Any organisation who did so would have intesimal advantage for all time to come.

However, there is one last point. Nowadays, the Jews themselves, regard the worship and presence of their god as what is important and of great and greatest value. As valueable as these things are(be they still intact) their monetary value is nothing to their historical value. Their historical value is insignificant to their religous value. The respect and good name and reputation for any who returned them far outweighs even the religous value. For this is moral. And today the Jews worship by the heart. And above even respect, good name and reputation-stands the heart. Hope this helps.
