What were the ways in which gold is extracted from gold ore over the past century?

One way is to crush the ore with giant mechanical hommers and put the powder, chushed rock into water, then adding mercury, sometimes cyinide ( i think ) the mercury bonds to the gold through some kind of electro, chemical magnitism, then the mecury/gold is easily removed in a clod. Then they burn off the mercury and are left with just the gold. the process is very easy you have to mix up the slurry for a good while to get it all ( the gold and mercury ) clumped together. I don't think you are going to do this but if you are wear a mask (dangerous fumes).
