Is Seven a Lucky Number for Windows?

Microsoft’s new operating system, Windows 7 is slated for release into the market on October 22nd and already it has been one of the most talked about products this year.  Industry watchers are eagerly anticipating its release with some wondering if Windows 7 will indeed be a worthy adversary to the Mac OS.  Its features certainly appear impressive and we should have the answer to that question shortly.

Touch is the Way to Go

One remarkable feature of Windows 7 is undoubtedly its multitouch capabilities.  On the Windows OS itself, the performance is already quite exciting but think about the possibilities that it implies when it comes to third party applications.

You can scroll through the pages of a document window by running your finger through the display and if you want to navigate through the pages faster, you flick a finger and several pages go by.  You can open a window by touching an icon on the taskbar, flick open a menu and re-arrange windows around the desktop.  Other gestures that you will see on Windows 7 are tapping and dragging, zoom through pinch actions, two-finger rotate and so on.

Developers are already starting to create touch-based programs that will run on Windows 7.  Among the earliest demos were for touch-based games, drawing programs, 3D imaging and design.

Productivity Enhancing Features

Touch is just one among many features that will make Windows 7 an excellent OS.  For instance, there’s the taskbar which now displays larger icons for easier viewing.  You can add frequently used programs so they are easily accessible, and a nifty feature is that when you hover above the icons you will see thumbnails of the files and hovering over the thumbnail will give you a peek inside the file itself.

Jump Lists are another element that improves workflow.  Jump lists are like a favorites list – it reflects the most recently or frequently used files.  Clicking on the Excel icon, for example, will show you a list of the spreadsheets that you are currently working on.

Microsoft also incorporated a highly intuitive desktop experience where you drag windows to the sides to compare them – no need to resize the windows to make them both visible.  If you want to look at your desktop without having to close all the documents that you have open, you move the mouse pointer to the lower right of the desktop and it renders all windows transparent.

Internet Explorer 8 is also pre-installed on Windows 7 which showcases features such as accelerometers, instant search and web slices -- all designed to make your online tasks go about more speedily and efficiently.

Microsoft versus Apple, All Over Again

This latest development from Microsoft certainly brings attention once again to its rivalry with Apple.  Microsoft certainly seems serious in making sure that Windows 7 performs impeccably.  If the Microsoft platform delivers on its promises, some analysts believe it may catch up to the Mac OS X.  Of course, some are skeptical and with Apple’s upcoming Snow Leopard, we may have to wait and see where these developments will take the two software giants’ rivalry.
