What Qualifications Do Medical Writers Need?

Being employed as a Medical Writer can be a very rewarding profession. Medical Writers are often in demand as Medical Secretaries, Medical Journal Writers and Medical Transcriptionists. What are the qualifications of a Medical Writer?

For one thing, obviously you have to have an excellent command of the English Language since most of the medical reports you will make will probably be in English if you live in America; In Britain the English used will be slightly different. You also have to have an extensive knowledge of medical terminology, which means you're going to have to learn some Greek and Latin too, since many medical terms are of Greek and Latin origin.

At first, Medical Terminology can be very challenging. Learning the pronounciation of 15 to 25-lettered words is not going to be easy to remember, words such as "Gastrostenosis", "Largyngoparalysis", or "Esophagogastroduodenoscopy", to name a few.

By now, you surley have an idea of how challenging Medical Terminology can be. But not to worry. Medical Terminology can be as easy as learning your ABC's once you master it. Firstly, you learn how to read medical terms backwards to forward. In other words, unlike reading most words, which is usually forward to back, you read Medical Terminology by starting from the back or end of a word.

For example, take the word "Gastritis", which means, "inflammation of the stomach", "-Itis", meaning "inflammation", and "Gastr", meaning "stomach". You get the general idea of what it means to be a Medical Writer. This will be the rule of thumb whether you're a Medical Secretary, Journal Writer or Transcriptionist.

In order to be an effective Medical Writer, you will also be required to know medical symbols. Suppose you were writing a medical draft about a patient's condition? Do you know how to write technical medical terms or symbols correctly? These are the fundemental elements you have to learn to be a Medical Writer.

One form of Medical Writing is the previous-mentioned Medical Transcription. This profession particularly requires a lot of skill because you have to know how to use a Transcription machine properly. It comes with a pedal for speed control so you can listen to the instructions or medical cases given by the doctor. This is not always the easiest task to accomplish, as each doctor speaks at different speeds or they may even have a foreign accent, which can be even more of a challenge.

But Medical Transcriptionists/Writers can demand a large income, which can range from $50,000 to $60,000 a year or more, depending on the writer's individual skill or talent.

Yes, being a Medical Writer can be a challenge, but it can be very rewarding indeed.
