If you want a stronger pet, wait till you reach level 20, then find an animal you want and death level it.

To do that, have the charm animal skill on your toolbar, make sure you have two healers with your (hero's work best) and remove all your armor. Make sure you are near a rez shrine just in case. Attack the animal and let it kill you. Do this over and over again. The creature will level up as it kills you. When it reaches about lvl 15, start putting your armor back on, you don't want it to one-hit kill you. You can tame it around level 17 or so.
