how can you distinguish gold from brass?

I have an old pewter chess set that is either gold or brass plated (acetone does not affect it)
The problem is one pawn shop said it was 10 karat gold, another one says its contains no gold, a jewelry store says (without testing) its brass still another said (on the phone) they have no way of knowing. is there a place I can take it to find out for sure? How much will it cost?
I want to put it on ebay and don't want to misrepresent it. I believe it is an old ital fama set but not sure. Anyone have advice for me? Thanks

Ok, brass tarnishes. If it is an old set and the pieces look like gold, shiny with no tarnish it must be Gold Plated. If it looks like an old penney it is brass. The only way around that is if it was plated in brass and then sprayed in clear lacquer... If it is plated it is most likely gold plated. Me? I sell many articles on ebay, stop worrying yourself and just put a good picture of the set on your sale and label it, "Gold or Brass plated" along with what you wrote above.
